Even some long-time Georgia residents may not be aware that they could travel a short distance and meet former US President Jimmy Carter. Yes, you read that correctly! You can meet a former US President in person!
Although most Americans know President Carter as a humanitarian and spiritual man, many people do not know that he has been teaching Sunday School for most of his adult life, and he still teaches many Sundays at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, Georgia – less than 4 hours from Augusta!
Recently, Sharon Head, and her son Michael had the honor of attending a Sunday School class taught by President Carter. For those of you who know Michael, it won’t surprise you that the visit was his idea. Michael has always had an interest in US History, politics, and current events. In fact, he is currently attending the University of Georgia and is considering an accelerated program to earn a Law Degree.
Before the class, the church hosted an orientation due to the sheer number of people in attendance – not only from Georgia, but from across the nation and even internationally. There were people there from all walks of life and faith backgrounds. On this particular Sunday, when President Carter asked the class from where people had traveled, the answers varied from Chile, the Middle East, Africa, Minnesota, and California. Truly too many to count!
“One of the neatest things to learn was that the audience is asked not to stand or clap when President Carter arrives at the teaching podium. He is very humble and unpretentious,” said Sharon Head, when she described the experience to our team.
The lesson President Carter taught was on the Battle of Jericho, found in the Bible, in the book of Joshua, Chapter 6. His consideration for others was evident in that he reviewed the historical context of the story before his lesson knowing that many might not be familiar with it. And, he even mentioned how this historical story tied into modern day politics in Palestine, an interesting and relevant commentary.
Both Sharon and Michael had a wonderful time and were able to have their picture taken with President Carter and His wife. If you’re interested in attending one of President Carter’s classes, be sure to visit the church’s RSVP page which lists the dates he’s teaching, and arrive early. (The line starts as early as 5:30am because the seats are available on a first-come-first-serve basis!)
“We’re grateful for the opportunity to meet one of our nation’s leaders and to learn from him,” said Sharon, when recounting her experience.
Be sure to ask Sharon or Michael about their experience the next time you see them. And, if you end up attending one of President Carter’s Sunday School Class, please let us know! We’d enjoy hearing about your experience as well.
